The Montreal Canadiens have officially brought winger Sammy Blais back into the organization, reclaiming the Quebec native off waivers just two months after losing him to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The move comes after Toronto placed Blais on waivers Wednesday, following the activation of Auston Matthews and Nicolas Roy from injured reserve. With their roster tightening, the Leafs cut loose the forward, who was quickly snatched up by Montreal on Thursday afternoon.

A Short but Productive Maple Leafs Stint

Toronto originally claimed Blais from the Canadiens on October 6, shortly after Montreal had signed him to a one-year deal on July 1, 2025. His arrival in Toronto was prompted by the preseason injury to Scott Laughton, which left them short on depth.

During his eight games with the Leafs, Blais recorded:

1 goal

2 assists

Despite the limited action, he brought the same physical edge and energy that coach Craig Berube admired during their time together in St. Louis’ 2019 Stanley Cup run.

What’s Next for Blais?

Reports indicate that Blais will now join the AHL’s Laval Rocket, where he’s expected to provide depth, experience, and offensive upside.

Last season, he was a key contributor to the Abbotsford Canucks’ Calder Cup championship, posting:

14 goals

40 points in 51 games

A Career Built on Grit and Big Moments

Drafted 176th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2014, Blais has compiled:

265 NHL games

28 goals and 74 points

He also helped Team Canada win gold at the 2023 World Championship, scoring six goals and eight points in 10 games.

Now, with his return to Montreal, the Canadiens get back a familiar face — and a player hungry to prove he still belongs on an NHL roster.
